Greenland is becoming a much bigger NATO security issue — and the United States is expanding its military footprint without changing who owns the island.
On September 22, the United States, Denmark and Greenland signed a new security agreement that expands the U.S. military presence in Greenland. The arrangement is expected to add two sites — Narsarsuaq in southern Greenland and Mestersvig in the east — alongside the existing Pituffik Space Base.
Why does Greenland matter so much?
Because of its geography.
Greenland sits between North America and the Arctic, making it strategically important for the security of the North Atlantic and the wider Arctic region. The island also has significant mineral resources, adding an economic dimension to its growing geopolitical importance.
The key change is not simply more American infrastructure.
It is the framework around it.
Denmark says the agreement places Arctic security more firmly within NATO rather than leaving responsibility solely to Washington and Copenhagen. NATO has welcomed the arrangement as contributing to security, stability and cooperation in the region.
