They pledged themselves to Muhammad to wage war against all. Muhammad promised them paradise. Allah gave Muhammad permission to wage war. The promise to fight became a condition to all who gave allegiance to Islam.
Allah therefore permitted Muhammad and his followers to fight. Since permission to fight had been granted, Muhammad accepted allegiances only from people who swore to fight. And for this, he promised them paradise as a reward.
