John Adams & Thomas Jefferson met with the Ottoman Ambassador in London in 1785-86 in an attempt to negotiate an end to Muslim attacks on American ships & the selling of their crews as slaves.
Please note that the American Revolution ended in 1783, & that George Washington would not become president until 1788. We were operating under the Articles of Confederation at this time.
Ambassador Sidi Haji Abdul Rahman Adja told them "Islam is founded on the Koran, & that it was their right & their duty to make war upon any or all infidels." By this logic, Islam has been continuously at war with the USA for nearly 250 years.
