Festinger coined the term spiritual cognitive dissonance when discussing or describing homosexuals. An internal conflict arises when a person’s beliefs run contrary to their behavior. This in turn results in anxiety & feelings of shame or anger. To put it in more musical terms, there is a constant disharmony in their lives. The homosexual feels as if they are out of tune or off key. They don’t quite fit in with the rest of society. When the homosexual is unable to freely fulfill their sexual desires, it generates a state of internal conflict or cognitive dissonance. If this is not resolved or relieved, it leads to fear, distrust, depression, & an array of antisocial or self-destructive actions.
