The 1619 Project asserts the USA was founded on & financed by slavery. If true it only stands to reason for you to expect those former slave states be among the richest of the 50 states.

However, the 4 richest states are New York, Massachusetts, Washington, & California - with medium family incomes of >90 grand. NY ended slavery in 1827; MA in 1783. WA & CA never had it.

Viewed from a different angle: at 7% New Hampshire has the lowest percentage of people living below the poverty line; at 8% Utah comes in 2nd; Colorado & Delaware are tied for 3rd at 9%. NH abolished slavery in 1857. UT & CO never had it. During the Civil War, enslaved Africans accounted for only ~1% of DE's population.

If slavery built the USA in general, then how did slavery build Montana specifically? Montana became American territory in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase. It would then become the 41st state in 1889, that is 23 years after the 13th amendment abolished slavery. Today, less than 1% of Montana's population is Black.

If slavery built the USA in general, then how did slavery build Hawaii in particular? The Hawaiian Islands became an American territory in 1898, which was 33 years after the Civil War ended. Hawaii became the 50th state in 1959. And today, Blacks make up only between 1% & 2% of the population.

If slavery built the USA in general, then how did slavery build Oklahoma in particular? When ~17 thousand Cherokee were forcefully moved from the Carolinas to the Oklahoma territory during the 1830's, they brought with them ~2 thousand enslaved Africans. However, the name Oklahoma derives from the Chocktaw words for people & red. Prior to 1889, the Sooner State was considered Indian territory, as it was off-limits to White settlement until then. Yet Oklahoma wouldn’t become the 46th state for another 18 years, until 1907. Currently ~8% of Oklahoma’s population is Black.

If slavery built the USA in general, then how did slavery build Alaska specifically? Alaska became the 49th state in 1959; that is 94 years after the Civil War. The area was purchased from the Russians in 1867, that is 2 years after the 13th amendment abolished slavery. Today, only between 3% & 4% of Alaska's population is Black.

If slavery built the USA in general, how did slavery build Vermont in particular? When Vermont became the 14th state in 1791, its constitution forbade slavery. And 232 years later, Blacks still make up only between 2% to 3% of the population.
