The Breakthrough Institute estimates that 4.6 million of those deaths are due to temperatures that are colder than ideal, while 0.5 million are due to temperatures that are hotter than ideal.

A 2021 study published in The Lancet Planetary Health found that cold is more deadly than heat, with a ratio of nine deaths from cold to one death from heat.
